A Two-Tongued Sword

God calls things you cannot see in the natural as though they already exist. Look at what the book of Romans says about God’s promise to Abraham:

Therefore, the promise comes by faith, so that it may be by grace and may be guaranteed to all Abraham’s offspring—not only to those who are of the law but also to those who are of the faith of Abraham. He is the father of us all. As it is written: “I have made you a father of many nations.” He is our father in the sight of God, in whom he believed—the God who gives life to the dead and calls things that are not as though they were.

Romans 4:16–17, NIV (italics added)

As a child of God, you are counted among Abraham’s offspring. The promise that comes by faith is for you. God calls things that are not in your life as though they were, and He wants you to do the same. When you feel weak, God calls you strong. He commands you to say it, too: “Let the weak say, ‘I am strong’” (Joel 3:10). When you feel anxious or depressed, say, “Jesus told me, ‘My peace I leave with you.’” When you are trying to gain control of your eating habits and lose weight, say, “My body desires healthy food, not comfort food. I have self-control and a metabolism that burns fat. My body works the way God created it to work.” When you and your boss or you and your spouse are at odds, say, “I have favor with my boss; we work great together. God uses my boss to bless me.” Or say, “My spouse and I love each other; we are going to have a long, awesome life together full of forgiveness and adventure.”

Before he even made a move, David declared the great things God would help him accomplish. And he kept on saying them. Before he went out to fight Goliath, he first told King Saul, “Your servant has killed both lion and bear; and this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them. . . . The LORD, who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear, He will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine” (1 Samuel 17:36–37). And David’s confession did not stop there. Goliath himself heard it next from David:

“This day the LORD will deliver you into my hand, and I will strike you and take your head from you. And this day I will give the carcasses of the camp of the Philistines to the birds of the air and the wild beasts of the earth, that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel.”

1 Samuel 17:46

And so it happened, just as David had spoken.

Think about it—anybody can shout when the giant is lying down. Any army can shout when the walls of the city have crumbled at their feet. But to shout victory before it happens is a whole different matter.
